MARY YOUNG (BUCHANAN)

June 23, 2021

Mary Young of Tiverton died at her home, Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at the age of 91. Born and raised in Inverhuron, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Martha Buchanan. Mary will be sadly missed by her family. Beloved wife of Ross Young who predeceased her, April 17, 1990. Loving mother of Kenneth Young (Jeannette) of Tiverton, Kathleen Young (John) of Tiverton, and Karen (Bertin) Young of Kincardine. Dear grandmother of Stephanie Stanley (Matt), Bradley Young (Hailey), Kelsey Young (Mike), Dusty Hughes, Brock Bertin (Jenn), and Nicki Bertin (Mike). Fondly remembered by her great-grandchildren, Madison, Jake, Andrew, Ben, Kinsey and Bree. Missed by members of the extended Young family and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her brothers, John Buchanan and Keith Buchanan. Mary married Ross Young in 1948, and they purchased a farm on the Northline of Kincardine Township. This was the start of their farming career, as they later purchased a farm on the B-Line (Bruce County Road 23) where they continued to farm for many years. When waking the family Mary’s favourite saying was, “Rise and shine, you are on the B-Line!” In 1966, Mary and Ross started Ross Young Bus Lines. Along with owning and operating the bus company themselves, Mary drove bus No. 3 for 38 years. She also was the secretary for the Bruce County School Bus Association. One of Mary’s adventures driving the school bus, was having her bus-load stranded at her house because of the famous Bruce County winter storms and the plows were not able to keep the road open. She often commented many times how good all the 60-plus children got along until they were able to get them home. Mary was a very busy lady, enjoyed raising a family, running a bus company, being a member on many community groups, events, and still found time to help with friends and family. She was a board member of the Tiverton Agricultural Society, Tiverton Community Centre, Tiverton Minor Sports, Tiverton Knox Presbyterian Church, and many other organizations in Tiverton. The family joke was, if you wanted to see Mom/Grandma, you needed to make an appointment with her. But when it came time for family gatherings, she was the first to be calling to say, “Let’s get this organized, we all need to get together.” She showed so much love to her family. Mary enjoyed all the fun and hard work that went into going to the heavy horse shows, showing their Belgian horses with her family and friends. She also enjoyed many camping adventures with her Gypsy Camper group. Her family was her pride and joy, and she always put them first. Her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren were the highlight of her life, and she spoke many times about how proud she was of each and everyone of them. Mom/Grandma, we will keep up the card tournaments that you loved so much. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a private family graveside service to honour Mary’s life, will be held at the Tiverton Cemetery, Friday, June 25, 2021, with Wes Elmes officiating. Memorial donations to the Tiverton Agricultural Society or Tiverton Knox Presbyterian Church, would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy, and may be arranged on-line or by contacting the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home; www.daveylinklaterfuneralhome.com/.
